China and Cambodia Mark 77 Years of Diplomatic Ties with Pledge to Deepen Partnership

China's embassy in Phnom Penh marked the 77th anniversary of the People's Republic of China's establishment with a celebration at Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra on September 21. The gathering brought together Cambodia's Foreign Affairs Minister Prak Sokhonn and Chinese Ambassador Wang Wenbin, who both emphasized the enduring bond between their nations.

Speaking at the event, Ambassador Wang characterized the bilateral relationship as one between "true friends and good partners" who have weathered challenges together while building deep mutual confidence. He referred to the connection as an "ironclad friendship" that continues to strengthen with time.

"China firmly supports Cambodia in choosing its own development path and will remain one of Cambodia's most trusted partners in its development process," Wang stated.

The ambassador highlighted Beijing's commitment to working with Phnom Penh on implementing agreements reached by both countries' leadership, with particular focus on advancing the "Fish and Rice Corridor" and "Industrial Corridor" initiatives. He emphasized both nations' dedication to developing their partnership as an example of a community built on shared aspirations.

Minister Sokhonn drew attention to the upcoming 70th anniversary in 2026 of the late King Father Norodom Sihanouk's inaugural visit to China, describing it as a pivotal moment that transformed bilateral relations.

He credited successive leadership on both sides with cultivating what has become an "ironclad friendship" and comprehensive strategic partnership grounded in mutual respect, confidence, and support for each nation's fundamental interests and territorial integrity.

Sokhonn expressed gratitude for China's ongoing assistance in Cambodia's development priorities, including infrastructure projects, energy sector growth, transportation networks, and water resource systems.

Economic ties between the two countries have expanded significantly, with bilateral trade climbing from approximately $15 billion in 2024 to more than $19 billion in 2025. Chinese investment flows into Cambodia have similarly increased during this period.

The minister voiced optimism that both nations would continue building their "all-weather" partnership and play a constructive role in promoting regional and global peace, stability, and economic prosperity.
